What is SkullSpace?
SkullSpace is a hackerspace in Winnipeg. SkullSpace is a place for hackers, builders, programmers, artists and anybody interested in how stuff works to gather in a common place and help focus their knowledge and creativity. Whether members are interested in individual or group projects, and whether they're tackling hardware, software, mathematical, design or any other problems, it's our goal to provide the space, tools, freedom, and education to make it happen.
Our physical presence is around 4000 sq ft of space on the 3rd floor of 125 Adelaide Street, right across from Red River College in the exchange. We are in the process of renovating the space, having gained possession on June 1st, 2011.
Our legal entity is a non-profit corporation with the province of Manitoba. We have a member-elected Board of Directors who also act as Officers consisting of:
- Ron Bowes (President)
- Courtney Lofchick (Vice President)
- Jay Smith (Financial Officer)
- Mak Kolybabi (Acting Project Coordinator until 2012-11-27)
- Ian Trump (Acting Operations Manager until 2012-11-27)
All Directors can be reached by email at firstname.lastname @ skullspace.ca
In practice our membership operates as a collective, with members being as involved as much as they want to be in the decision making process. Look at our Bylaws.
Also see our Press coverage.
Check out this short video about another hackerspace if you're still wondering what exactly we're trying to do here: short video.
Meetings/Events
Meetings are every Tuesday at 6pm at SkullSpace, 3rd floor 125 Adelaide Street. You can also browse our previous Meeting notes archive.
Open nights, which are days when non-members are welcome to drop in, are:
- Every Tuesday at 6pm
- The third Saturday of every month for the hackathon, noon-8pm
- The first Friday of every month at 7pm (for First Fridays)
We also have a variety of events during the week and weekends - see our Calendar for a complete listing!
How do I join?
Easy! First you should show some interest by joining our Mailing List, liking our Facebook page and following us on Twitter. You should also come chat with us on our irc channel and show up to our meetings. You can also head by during our open times (see Meetings/Events above). We are open to anyone and everyone as indicated on our Policy page. You should also create an account on our wiki and poke around and add ideas where appropriate. We also have a Category:Required Reading category on the wiki that you should go through.
Get involved and help shape the first ever Winnipeg hackerspace!
If you like what you see then you can apply to become a member. Our membership dues are $40/month and this gets you 24/7 access to the space along with everything else listed on the Member Benefits page. To apply to become a member either talk to any of us at one of our meetings or email us at info@skullspace.ca.
When you're ready, fill out the Category:Paperwork (membership agreement and pre-authorized debit form) and bring them, along with a blank cheque or a letter from your bank, to one of the Directors (for the technical steps, see the New members page). To fill in the pre-authorized debit form, simply enter your information in the top part, and sign/date the first two places that require a signature.
Why would I join?
Lots of reasons! Become part of a community, attend talks and workshops, and more! See our Member Benefits page for more information.
