January 6th, 2015 - 18:00 @ 200-374 Donald

  • Call to order 18:00 - 12 Members present
  • Previous meeting minutes reviewed and approved without modification
  • Ben's brother's gaming tournament was a success.
  • Cleaners
    • The Cleaners Ian has donated to us for the last year cost about 20/hour.
    • A quick vote was taken on who wants cleaning to be done monthly at a cost of 20/hour.
    • Majority paying cleaners.
  • Financial update
  • Cleaners
    • Cleaning of the space is estimated as taking 4-5 hours @ $20/hour each month. (80-100)
    • Group suggested looking into the costs of cleaning just the bathroom and if the cleaner would even come to just clean the bathrooms.
    • To pay for 4-5 hours each month might put us in the red rather quickly. We could have more fundraisers to make up for this. A clean and tidy space is more attractive to prospective and new users.
  • AGM is next month (February 24th)
    • By-law amendments should be given to the board more than three weeks before the AGM (End of January)
    • Ian suggested that a student is selected from all the student members as an advocate on behalf of students and potential student members to make it less intimidating. Ian has fears that students perceive it as difficult to be a member.
    • Jay mentions that his preference is for all members to be seen as equal regardless of membership type. The point of student memberships was to offset a societal economic balance, not introduce a new one.
    • Ben: "Students may not have time to run on the board"
    • Ian: "Being on the board is a Career/resume booster and would give the student body power on the board." (students are already allowed to run for the board and have been voted in in the past)
    • Jeremy (reads actual bylaws) "The current bylaws state by law changes must be brought up three weeks in advance of any amendments"
    • Jay: "Bylaws can be changed AT ANY TIME but the 21 day period is mandatory." (getting them down at the AGM is nice)
    • Jay: "If you want to run for board positions PLEASE DO! It's not as stressful as you think."
  • Events for 2015
    • If you have any ideas for cool events get your strike force together! The AGM is a great time to announce them.
    • Robert Keizer: "An Intro Music Theory class will be taught by Robert's friend, 21st of January. More notes to go out to the list(s)."
    • Jay: "Mark Jenkins will be hosting an Intro to Linux study/discussion group" (tied to the $60 online course from edX https://www.edx.org/course/introduction-linux-linuxfoundationx-lfs101x-2)
  • Recent Development
    • The Drink Fridge froze and was discovered today (Jan 6.) Lots of cans expanded and exploded all over the inside. Some simply expanded (drink them) Some sticky soda had leaked on the floor.
    • It was cleaned up by Robert Keizer, Courtenay Lofchick and Stephan. Give them a pat on the back!
  • The end of meeting bell rang at 18:19.

  • Food Hackathon!
    • the Food hackathon went really well. It was well attended and there was loads of food.
    • Presentations and hands-on demonstrations were excellent. Thanks to Sarah, Michael, Shab, Daniel, Nick and Nate for their work.
    • There was some confusion on start time. The Facebook event was created for the time we had access to the facility. Even though the text of the event stated that presentations, etc. were later we still had people show up early. We should be more clear on this for future events.
    • We definitely need to do another dinner or food-themed event again some time. Possibly an annual Hacksgiving Dinner.
  • Blog!
    • Jay wants to rejuventate the blog.
    • Sarah and Nate are working on a blog post collecting recipes, and presentations for the Food Hackathon.
  • Central Canadian Comic Con
    • Sarah is coordinating our presence, please talk to her if you are able to volunteer
    • The line at C4 is *long* - helping out means cheaper tickets and you get in so much faster! The price for these perks is helping set up the con
    • We *think* Thursday (the 30th) is the setup
    • The biggest problem is the table itself. We have a table skirt, but nothing exciting to put on it. Cool blinking-light projects help a lot, if you have one of those to put out that would help. Last year we made LED throwies, and demonstrated Siu's LED array.

  • Anti-Social
    • A lot of new people attended, but overall attendance was down.
    • Hacker Jeopardy was a raging success, so much so that it drew the crowd away from the DJs/social.

  • SkullCamp
    • Scheduling did not work our for the last planned event. It has been postponed, likely until spring.
  • Game AI hackathon
    • Hats off to Mak for putting in a huge amount of effort and getting the gameai.skullspace.ca site and a whole bunch of sample bots done. Presentation was excellent and everything worked perfectly, save a few complaints about the speed.
    • Ben did a genetic algorithm, which didn't really work
    • Despite all odds (and logic), 5bot and 6bot did relatively well
    • All in all the event was a success and paved the way for future more exciting game events (Battleship, Carcasonne, etc.)

  • Central Canadian Comic Con is coming up in OCtober.
    • Ashria is interested in coordinating our presence there

    • Out July hackathon was all about math and programming.
    • In true Mak fashion, Mak managed to solve his big problem (the hexagonal orchard) the night before.

    • All members/friends/family are encouraged to buy gift cards. They end up costing you nothing and SkullSpace makes a percentage. Contact Courtney for details.
  • State of the space

    • The drink machine has a huge energy cost to operate and takes up a large amount of space.
    • we can replace it with a higher efficiency fridge
    • No one opposed removal of the drink machine provided we had a suitable replacement
    • We could also get rid of the upright freezer. It is usually mostly empty and we could make due with the smaller freezer in our existing refrigerator.
    • Edwin suggested we might be able to convert the upright freezer into a drink fridge. Molly may be able to offer guidance.
  • Baby change station
    • Colin C. is meeting with the landlord to ask if we can mount a baby changing table to one of the bathroom walls. He will report back.
