EDITING - if you want to edit this wiki, go ahead and be bold! You should no longer need authorization, just an account that you can create yourself, but we're going to keep a close watch for spam. If it becomes an issue, we'll return to requiring authorization before being allowed to update. --Ron 12:32, 21 September 2011 (CDT)

What is SkullSpace?

SkullSpace is a recently-founded hackerspace in Winnipeg. SkullSpace is a place for hackers, builders, programmers, artists and anybody interested in how stuff works to gather in a common place and help focus their knowledge and creativity. Whether members are interested in individual or group projects, and whether they're tackling hardware, software, mathematical, design or any other problems, it's our goal to provide the space, tools, freedom, and education to make it happen.

Our physical presence is around 4000 sq ft of space on the 3rd floor of 125 Adelaide Street, right across from Red River College in the exchange. We are in the process of renovating the space, having gained possession on June 1st, 2011. Our current working floor plan is available as either a dwg:125_Adelaide_v5.dwg or a pdf:125_Adelaide_v5.pdf.

Our legal entity is a non-profit corporation with the province of Manitoba. We have a member-elected Board of Directors who also act as Officers consisting of:

  • Ron Bowes (President)
  • Mak Kolybabi (Vice President)
  • Andrew Orr (Financial Officer)
  • Courtney Lofchick (Board Secretary)
  • Justin Lacko (Operations Manager)

All Directors can be reached by email at firstname.lastname @ skullspace.ca

In practice our membership operates as a collective, with members being as involved as much as they want to be in the decision making process. A draft of our operating bylaws can be viewed here. The bylaws are currently being reviewed by lawyers to make sure they're legally sound.

Meetings/Events

Meetings are every Tuesday at 6pm at SkullSpace, 3rd floor 125 Adelaide Street. You can also browse our previous Meeting notes archive.

Open nights, which are days when non-members are welcome to drop in, are:

  • Every Tuesday at 6pm
  • The third Saturday of every month for the hackathon, noon-8pm
  • The first Friday of every month at 7pm (for First Fridays)

We also have a variety of events during the week and weekends - see our Calendar for a complete listing!

The September 17, 2011 hackathon (noon-8pm) will include the usual things that go on at our hackathon plus participation in Software Freedom Day, an international day of celebrating free and open source software. Planned so far is a Spacewar! tournament with historical information, all day OpenArena deathmatch, a computer aided design (CAD) demonstration, and the final hours of our "Hack first! Play it later" event on Battle For Wesnoth where we're hacking the game and after playing it together.

How do I join?
