We like BBS'ing at Skullspace 🚀👾
This page will grow to coordinate our BBS efforts and knowledge at Skullspace (and for anyone in Manitoba/Winnipeg too of course, feel free to follow along!).
Let's set up our own BBS and we can spend the time recording what we're doing for publishing on YouTube.
In the meantime, here are some popular servers and resources that people should know:
- Here is a BBS that is inactive, so it's sort of like a museum. Thor and Mark have logged on and left a few messages. Here is the web browser version anyone can use at l33t.codes (yes that is the url, so cool 😅)
- Our slack thread discussing accessing the server - picture (Slack thread) from the BBS above
Skull BBS
After a cursory google, here is an article on how to set up Synchronet (substack).
We can run this off the VM Server. I think bbs.skull.space would be lovely as a URL ❤️.

Intro:
Hi, welcome to Skullspace.
Before the internet, computers would use your home phone to post social media messages to these bulletin board systems. We called them BBS's!
This was one of the very first forms of online forums. All across Canada, and the US, we had people phoning each other and these BBS systems until the 90s when you could sign up for dial-up internet.
- Winnipeg was the BBS capital of Canada
- Several BBS's running out of here and we even had a school running BBS
Today we're going to walk you through using a BBS so you can experience the fun with us and later if you want you can connect to a BBS yourself on your own computer.
Without further ado, let's get into it.
Outro:
Hey thanks for watching, we hope you learned a lot and had fun. Next time will explore setting our own BBS.
We're Skullspace and we're open on Tuesdays so if you're in town feel free to drop in and say hi.
We'll see you next time here at Skullspace where we'll explore more of BBS's and other technology.
Recording Equipment
Here is a pretty basic kit idea (Thank you Ryan Wall for this list🙇):
