Naming

Please read the government of manitoba's corporate Naming Guidelines.

From that page we see the requirements are basically having "Winnipeg" in there somewhere, and ending with Inc. Ltd. or Corp. (or their non-abbreviated terms). Since Corp. is, well, too corporate, we're only considering Inc. and Ltd.

We should also keep in mind two other things:

  • We plan to apply for charity status, under the educational organization umbrella. The naming might give us better/worse chances of being accepted as a charity org. Also any grants we apply for will be under this name.
  • This will be the legal name and so any sponsoring of talks/events/etc would want to display this name. Something that shows professionalism would be ideal.

Tax Receipts

In order to be able to issue tax receipts, we need to apply for charity status with the CRA by filling out CRA Form T2050. This must be done after we are already incorporated. I'm not sure if we qualify, and the paperwork involved is intimidating. Being able to issue tax receipts would be awesome, so I think this is worth looking into.
